Surprising there are many access permissions you can give to your front-end users. For example, you can have authors, publishers, and even editors who only have access to the front end of your site, but because of their user type, more options will be displayed for them. You can also give back-end users the permission to edit front-end content using different access permissions.Ok, here is the break down before I confuse you even more!
The first two types of Joomla users can be defined as:
Registered Users: Signed up with the site, verified.
Guests: visitors to your website
You are mainly concerned with the registered users permissions and types because they are the most confusing. But, don't allow your guests too much access. Make sure you monitor the access levels as you create more content and design your navigation links.
Registered users can be broken down into Front-end users and Back-end users.
Front-end users can have many access rights, including the ability to change content, create content, utilize WYSIWYG editors and more. It is up to you to decide how much of this access you will allow them. That is why the Front-end registered users are also broken down into more categories:
These roles have specified access to all of these things from the FRONT-END of the website. This shouldn't be confused with the administrator's back-end ability.
Registered: Cannot create content, edit content, or publish new content to the website. They can only submit bookmarks (weblinks) and they also hace access to content that is not available to guests (as defined by you!)
Author: Create content, choose the display properties and can choose or change the date that the content should be published to the website.
Editor: They have all of the ability of the author, but with additional ability to edit their content or other author's content.
Publisher: They have access to do everything that the authors and editors can do, but they can actually publish content to the website.
Back-end Users (Access in the Back-end of the site)
Manager: Have access to the back end of the site and all of the "Content" specific control abilities. They don't have access to Templates, alter page layouts, or add/delete extensions in Joomla. They cannot change user access or profiles.
Administrator: CAN Add or delete extensions, change templates, later page layouts, and can change profiles and access levels of those underneath them. Cannot change some Global settings of the website.
Super Administrator: Unrestricted ability to do EVERYTHING!
Hopefully this was helpful in your understanding of Joomla users and their access levels. Good Luck!
